Last month, Chevy announced that the long-awaited RS variant of the popular Sonic would make it's official debut in Detroit. With this addition, the trim levels available on the 2013 Sonic rises to a total of seven. That means that this little hatchback is not just fun and affordable, it's now even more versatile and dynamic, to boot. And, we're happy to say, debuted in Detroit last week and the critics are raving.
Before the show, John Mack, Sonic Design Director, said, "The Sonic RS remains true to the progressive spirit of the concept and brings an unmistakable attitude for the segment. From every angle...it is a car that is unabashed in its performance statement - and one that drive Chevrolet's performance legacy into its second century."1
More specifically, the new Sonic RS gets a new front fascia, grille, and fog lamps; new spoiler and rocker moldings; chrome exhaust tip; and a new five-spoke wheel design for the 17-inch wheels. The 1.4-liter, 138-horspower engine is a peppy mate for the six-speed manual transmission. Chevy says an automatic transmission will be available, but a special tuning package will come standard with either transmission on the RS, which should make for one very fun driving experience. Did we mention the four-wheel discs, stiffer suspension and retuned exhaust?
Inside, the Sonic RS boasts sport seats, a thicker sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals and MyLink infotainment. And for safety, Chevy added a four-channel anti-lock brake system and brake force distribution that enables the car to adapt to all types of road conditions and varying cargo loads.
